The blank diameter must be held to a tight tolerance (within ±5 microns) since the metal displacement determines the final rolled size. The blank is placed between the rolling dies. High hydraulic force presses the dies into the workpiece. The material flows plastically into the die cavities, forming the spline profile without removing metal.
“Because rolling does not cut the steel fibers, rolled splines exhibit 30% higher shear and torsional fatigue resistance compared to hobbed splines.”
We monitor the rolling process using digital sensor feedback. Splines are checked using spline go/no-go ring gauges, span measurement micrometers and pitch runout testers(on Klingelnberg gear testers). The surface finish of rolled splines achieves an Ra of 0.20~0.40, reducing spline wear in assembly.
