Spline, Rack & Worm Rolling

Cold spline forming and thread rolling machines manufacturing high-fatigue automotive components.

Spline, Rack & Worm Rolling

Srimukha is a pioneer in chip-less metal forming. Our spline and rack rolling division cold-forms external splines and worms, preserving the continuity of metal grain fibers to provide higher torque capacity for our splined shafts.

Precision Rolling Machines

Our rolling division operates vertical-rack/circular-die cold forming machines:
  1. High-Precision CNC Worm Rolling Machines: World class machine from Profiroll, Germany for producing highly critical worms for tailgate spindles and wiper motor armature shafts.
  2. CNC Rack Rolling Machines: Heavy vertical rack rolling machines for forming deep helical worms and high-precision steering splines.
  3. CNC/Hydraulic Circular Die Spline Rollers: Hydraulic spline rolling machines utilizing dual synchronized rotating dies to press spline profiles.
  4. Thread & Form Rollers: 2-roll thread rollers for shaping studs, threads, and retaining ring grooves.

Rolling Process Workflow

The blank diameter must be held to a tight tolerance (within ±5 microns) since the metal displacement determines the final rolled size. The blank is placed between the rolling dies. High hydraulic force presses the dies into the workpiece. The material flows plastically into the die cavities, forming the spline profile without removing metal.

“Because rolling does not cut the steel fibers, rolled splines exhibit 30% higher shear and torsional fatigue resistance compared to hobbed splines.”

Spline Quality & Metrology

We monitor the rolling process using digital sensor feedback. Splines are checked using spline go/no-go ring gauges, span measurement micrometers and pitch runout testers(on Klingelnberg gear testers). The surface finish of rolled splines achieves an Ra of 0.20~0.40, reducing spline wear in assembly.
